Do you want to know what are the best virtual reality games are?

What about the best VR headset that gives the best experience?

With the holidays approaching, we’ve constructed absolutely EVERYTHING you need to know about VR, the best games, and what are the best choices to go with.

We are going to cover:
  1. The current platforms, and which one is the best
  2. The current virtual reality games, and which ones you need to experience and take home. (or send as gifts for this 2016 christmas!)
  3. Our final thoughts

First, What You Need To Know

What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality is an experience currently of putting headset (sometimes looking like a helmet) and having your eyes see through a lens that attempts to have you experience a full 360 degree effect. (Although its more like 110 degrees)

This effect is done to give people who enjoy media and videogames a more “immersive” experience by being part of the actual environment.

It’s become the new trends to experience for gamers and virtual reality will definitely broaden new horizons for the possibilities of videogames and media.

We are going to explain all the current virtual reality headsets that are mainstream and share how we experienced each headset and the quality of them.

All Of The Best Virtual Reality Headsets

Oculus Virtual Reality (VR)

oculus

What are the specs?

Platform: Windows PC

Can play standing, seated, and in different positions.

Field of view: 110 degrees

Refresh Rate: 90 Hz

Display Resolution: 1080 X 1200

Headset Weight: 1.0 lbs

Fit: Fits glasses

Included in the box: Oculus rift headset, camera sensor, remote, Xbox one wireless controller, Xbox USB Wireless adapter, 2xAA Batteries, Integrated headphone, removal tool, 2 X Oculus Logo stickers, Oculus Lens Wipe Cloth.

How is the experience?

Just to get some basic FAQ’s out of the way:

  1. Yes you can watch movies with it. (Only on the PC, and make sure you have a good graphics card, Nvidia GTX 970 or above)
  2. Yes, you can use it with your Xbox 360
  3. The display resolution is 2160 X 1200

We tried out the product and we definitely felt a sense of immersion with the product. From what we think based on other reviews online, people and other editors tend to really “hype up” what virtual reality really is.

The Oculus gives you a few free demos (and here were the best):

  1. Windlands (an indie tree jumping game)
  2. Stacks (Like Tetris)
  3. I expect you to die (a mystery-puzzle game)
  4. Misinformer (a block jumping game)
  5. Back to dinosaur island 2 (Imagine playing inside of the Jurassic Park Movie)

When we played the demo Windlands, it definitely felt like it had much depth in terms of becoming immersive and it feels like a much different experience compared to playing on the flat screen. You can actually see the sky around you, and imagine almost touching the clouds. Sometimes you can forget you are playing with a controller.

However we played around with all of the games (including some games available for purchase) we still feel that Oculus is still in developer mode. There are a ton of developers still being urged to play on this platform, yet we felt there was a big lack of A-list titles.

The Oculus experience is great, the first impressions are you really get to see the future of media and videogaming in general. We feel companies like Oculus are truly trying to set a new standard when involving yourself with entertainment.

However experience also ties into the actual purpose its attributing itself to, which is entertainment.

Application wise, we felt that the Oculus is worth buying after a few more years when much better videogame titles come out. It definitely lacks something stimulating outside of its “VR Experience”

Hows the product?

The product itself is sturdy, we are happy it came with an Xbox One controller that can also directly connect itself to your PC.

Although it can feel a little heavy and annoying after a few hours, if you are not playing a great game. Like we said before, this product lacks a lot of great videogame titles. We wouldn’t be surprised if you bought this product and you having it become another paper weight after the second month.

What is the maintenance?

There are no maintenance costs with this headset, however:

Make sure you have at least a 970 GTX series videocard or above. (We recommend at least a 980 GTX)

What is the cost to entry?

The Oculus Rift currently costs $599.00.

You also need a fast enough gaming computer that meets its requirements.

Oculus Rift Requirements

  • Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 or better.
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 4590 or greater.
  • RAM: 8GB or more.
  • Video port: HDMI 1.3.
  • USB port: 2 USB 3.0 ports.
  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer.
How many games are there now?

There are about 30-40 games currently ready to play on the Oculus VR.

What was the best game?

We found Chronos to be the best game for the Oculus VR.

Where do I buy one?

You can buy an Oculus Rift VR here on Amazon.

Alternatively you can buy the Oculus Rift + Alienware Oculus Ready X51 R3 i5 8GB Desktop PC Bundle
HTC VIVE
vive

Refresh rate: 90 HZ

Display Resolution: 1080 X 1200

Headset weight 1.2 Lbs

How is the experience?

The HTC Vive felt like a much more “lighter and carefree experience” virtual reality headset.

Some of the frequently asked questions before we start into the experience:

Is there prescription lenses?

No

We felt games were a lot more interactive for the HTC Vive, as well as some brand name titles such as Starwars. While your options are still limited for games, it had a much more expansive library in terms of the rest of the competition. We liked how HTC made a friendly port with Steam VR. This means that in the future many Steam-based titles will be available on the HTC Vive. (Half life 3 maybe..anyone…?)

The Steam VR software that comes with the VIVE is polished very well. We loved the user interface, and its very easy to switch out of your game into your desktop and read email. It’s easy to go through the Steam VR software and spend $40-80 on new games to add-on to your library.

Some games we recommend are:

The Lab

thelab

The Brookhaven Experiement

brookhaven

Audioshield

audioshield

Also there are other major releases upcoming for next year (2017) such as: Doom, Fallout 4, and Serious Sam.

On a side note, headset currently is a personal experience, as if you are looking for multiplayer, the person playing next to you MUST have a headset as well (or things wont be very fun).

You can also experience a lot of face sweat with this headset (its something about the padding) so make sure you are in a cool room. If you are wearing this in a hot room, this is going to be a very unpleasant experience.

Hows the product?

The HTC Vive just felt like a much more solid and audience friendly product. We felt they took a lot more time polishing their own product and software experience.

The SteamVR OS currently has the most promising and beautiful user interface’s compared to any other competitor currently.

What is the maintenance?

No maintenance costs for the HTC Vive VR.

What is the cost to entry?

The HTC Vive is priced at $799.00 at Amazon, where you can get the fastest shipping available for this product.

You also need a PC that is strong enough to play this.

PC Requirements:

GPU: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 / AMD Radeon™ RX 480 equivalent or greater

CPU: Intel® i5-4590 / AMD FX 8350 equivalent or greater

RAM: 4GB+

Operating System: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1 or later, Windows 10

How many games are there now?

There are currently 40-55+ games right now for the HTC Vive VR.

What is the best game?

We would say The Lab is currently the best game.

However Fallout 4 and Doom will be at the top of the list as soon as they are released in 2017.

Where do I buy one?

You can buy one here at Amazon for $799.00

It’s locked in at the best price so you wont meet those people at EBay that charge $1000+ for them. (We know who you are).

Samsung Gear VR – Virtual Reality Headset
samsung
What are the specs?

Platform: Samsung Smartphone

Experience: Seated VR

Field of View: 96 degrees

Refresh Rate: 60 HZ

Display Resolution: 1440 X 1280

Headset Weight: 0.7 Lbs

Fit: Fits glasses, focus adjustment

How is the experience?

Samsung attempts to provide an affordable VR experience by using a headset and a Samsung smartphone in one.

It features an easy to use touch pad with dedicated back and home buttons, a wide field of view with precise head tracking, and low latency. As well as an accelerometer, gyrometer, and proximity detection. It is compatible with the S7 series as well with the S6 series.

We felt the touchpad on the device was very smooth and updated their
“slow tacky feeling” from their previous models. We also enjoyed how the home button gave the ability to exit out of any application and return it to the Oculus Home dashboard.

Hows the product?

Currently the Samsung Gear VR headset doesn’t have much “amazing” applications or games.

There are free apps like:

ALTSPACE VR: Which is a virtual reality social platform that nobody uses..

NEXTVR: A pretty cool way to watch live streamed events in 180 degrees, giving you a front row seat to some sports games (and boring events like US Presidential Debates)

Samsung Internet: An app to browse the internet with a widescreen experience.

Oculus 360 Photos: Since this device is powered by Oculus, you get a sense of what the Oculus team did for photo presentations in widescreen.

OCULUS Arcade: An arcade of older SEGA games. (Gamepad required)

Temple Run VR: Self explanatory. (The temple run game in virtual reality)

Titans of Space: Virtual reality in space.

NetFlix VR: This one was pretty cool. You get setup in a nice cabin with a large bigscreen TV while watching Netflix.

The product overall is the most affordable one, it comes with some pretty cools apps and we feel it is geared towards people in their later 20’s and above. Most teens would want the other headsets that include better games, rather than media applications included in the gear VR.

What is the maintenance?

None. However, a Samsung 6 or 7 series (S6-S7) is required.

What is the cost to entry?

A Samsung gear currently costs $69.99 (on sale) , great for the upcoming holidays. It might go back up to its original price of $99.99.

How many games are there now?

There are currently at least 5-10 solid titles right now for the Gear VR.

What is the best game?

We honestly could not pick one, as this product didn’t feel geared towards gaming at all.

For media applications however, we did find Netflix to be the best overall application (in terms of everyday use).

Where do I buy one?

You can buy one here for $69.99 (sale price).

It might go back up to $99.99 depending on the season.

What about Windows Hololens?

hololens
What are the specs?

The current Windows Hololens spects are unknown.

How is the experience?

The Windows Hololens is an Augmented reality device, and it is not classified as virtual reality. We included it here because some people may be asking about this device.

The Microsoft Hololens is a device that acts as glasses and the transparent glass acts as the screen. Unlike Virtual Reality that covers up your whole eyes through a display.

With augmented reality glasses (Hololens) you can see everything around you through transparent glass, as the transparent glass displays objects around you. Anything from information about your environment to creating new objects (Like having a TV appear right in front of you)

The product is not released yet to the public, so we cannot give a fair review on this yet.

Hows the product?

Not released yet to the public.

What is the maintenance?

Display: 1080 X 960

Included in box: Headset, Processor Unit, connection cable, HDMI cable, USB cable, Stereo headphoes, AC power cord, AC adaptor, demo disc

How is the experience?

We haven’t had our hands on one yet, however, the Playstation VR looks the most promising for gamers, since it has arsenal to the full Playstation library.

We expect titles anywhere from Final Fantasy series, to Kingdom hearts, to KillZone.

Hows the product?

Not released yet.

What is the maintenance?

None.

What is the cost to entry?

Make sure you have a Playstation 4 when it releases this year. You can pre-order one here, along with buying the games here.

PSVR EVE: Valkyrie – PlayStation 4

eve

Batman: Arkham VR – PlayStation 4

arkham

PSVR Until Dawn: Rush of Blood – PlayStation 4
dawnPSVR DriveClub – PlayStation 4

drivelclub

What is the best game?

We are going to say its most likely going to be Batman Arkham VR or EVE: Valkyrie.

Where do I buy one?

You can pre-order one hereAlong with buying the games below:

PSVR EVE: Valkyrie – PlayStation 4

Batman: Arkham VR – PlayStation 4

PSVR DriveClub – PlayStation 4

PSVR Until Dawn: Rush of Blood – PlayStation 4

Thoughts

For you gamers out there, we felt that the Playstation VR will eventually surpass the HTC Vive just because of the massive Playstation library.

Unless HTC comes out with a AAA game (Which they aren’t known for..)

With the holidays coming up, and your friends (or you) looking for that cool and amazing gift, here is what we suggest you get depending on your needs:

For hardcore developers: The Oculus Rift VR

For gamers on the Playstation VR: You can pre-order one here or HTC VIVE

For casual media users: Samsung Gear VR
